A standby generator is the only backup power that starts itself, powers the whole house, and runs for days. After comparing 10 models on power, fuel, transfer switches, noise, warranty and price, here’s where the smart money goes in 2026.

Standby power by modelkW rating (LP fuel; natural gas may derate some models). More kW = more of your home stays on.

Power is only half the sizing story — your actual loads decide. Run the kW size calculator before choosing.

The shortlist

Best overall: Generac Guardian 26kW (9.3/10). The flagship of America’s best-selling standby line. 26 kW, 200A ATS included, Wi-Fi monitoring included, 5-year warranty, 6,000+ dealers. If your home is 2,500+ sq ft and you want everything on through an outage, this is the default answer. Check price on Amazon.

Best value: Champion 14kW aXis (8.7/10). 62 dB(A) — the quietest here — with a 10-year warranty at the lowest entry price. The aXis load management stretches 14 kW impressively far. Check price on Amazon.

Quietest pick: Kohler 20RESCL (8.8/10). A 64 dB(A) exercise cycle your neighbors will barely notice, corrosion-proof enclosure, and Kohler’s PowerBoost starting. Check price on Amazon.

Most popular size: Generac Guardian 22kW (9.0/10). The classic whole-house size for the median American home — 2,500 sq ft with central air — at a mid-range price. Check price on Amazon.

Most reliable: Cummins QuietConnect RS20A (8.5/10). Commercial Cummins engineering in the most compact 20 kW footprint here. Dealer-channel and premium-priced, but overbuilt. Check price on Amazon.

Price vs. standby powerEach dot is one model (cheapest street-price estimate). Lower and further right is better value.

Prices are street-price ranges, not live Amazon prices — and they exclude installation. Full numbers are in the comparison chart.

How to choose

Size first. Everything else is secondary to getting the kW right. Add up your running watts plus your largest motor’s starting surge (usually the AC), add 20–25% margin, and round up to the next standard size. Our kW size calculator does it in two minutes, and the sizing guide explains the method.

Then fuel. On propane you get the headline number; on natural gas several models derate by ~2 kW. A “20 kW” unit that’s 18 kW on your fuel with a 19 kW load is a tripping generator.

Then budget reality. The unit is roughly half the project. Installation — transfer switch wiring, gas line, panel work, pad, permits — typically adds $4,000–$8,000. The installation cost estimator gives you the honest all-in number before you call an installer.

Noise by modeldB(A) — manufacturer figures, usually measured during the weekly exercise cycle. Quieter is better.

For reference: 60 dB(A) is normal conversation, 70 dB(A) is a vacuum cleaner. Exercise-cycle noise matters most — the generator self-tests weekly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best standby generator in 2026?
For most large homes, the Generac Guardian 26kW: most power in the air-cooled class, 200A transfer switch and Wi-Fi monitoring included, 5-year warranty, and the densest dealer network. Budget buyers should look at the Champion 14kW aXis — quieter, longer warranty, much cheaper. The right size depends on your loads, so run the kW size calculator first.
How much does a whole-house standby generator cost?
The unit runs roughly $4,500–$7,500; professional installation adds $4,000–$8,000 for the transfer switch, gas line, panel work, pad and permits. Most homeowners land at $10,000–$15,000 all-in.
What size standby generator do I need?
Roughly: 14 kW for essentials plus one AC, 18–20 kW for most of a 1,500–2,500 sq ft home, 22–26 kW for true whole-house backup of 2,500+ sq ft. Add up running watts plus your largest motor's starting surge, then add 20–25% margin.
Generac or Kohler — which standby generator is better?
Both are excellent. Generac wins on dealer network density and usually on price; Kohler wins on enclosure quality (corrosion-proof composite) and motor-starting technology. Our Generac vs Kohler guide compares them head to head.
How loud are standby generators?
Most air-cooled units run 62–69 dB(A) — between normal conversation and a vacuum cleaner. The weekly exercise cycle is what your neighbors hear, so exercise-cycle noise matters more than full-load noise.
